Which company did Microsoft acquire in 2014, bringing Minecraft into Xbox ownership?

The story behind the answer

Microsoft acquired Mojang in 2014, bringing Minecraft into Xbox ownership.

Microsoft announced the acquisition of Mojang for 2.5 billion US dollars in September 2014. Mojang was the Swedish game company best known for creating Minecraft, the block-building sandbox game originally developed by Markus Persson.

The acquisition was completed later in 2014. Minecraft continued to appear on multiple platforms rather than becoming an Xbox-exclusive game, including PlayStation, Nintendo, mobile and personal-computer systems.

Mojang was later renamed Mojang Studios. Microsoft’s purchase is often confused with its acquisitions of other major game companies: Microsoft acquired Rare in 2002, ZeniMax Media in 2021 and Activision Blizzard in 2023. Those transactions involved different companies and franchises.
