Which company developed and published Dota 2?

The story behind the answer

Valve developed and published Dota 2. The game is Valve’s standalone sequel to Defense of the Ancients, the influential Warcraft III custom map that helped establish the modern multiplayer online battle arena genre.

Valve hired IceFrog, a lead designer associated with the original DotA community, in 2009 to create a standalone remake. Dota 2 retained the earlier game’s team-based structure: two teams of five control heroes, gather experience and items, and try to destroy the opposing team’s Ancient. Valve released the game through Steam in 2013.

Blizzard Entertainment is a common source of confusion because the original Defense of the Ancients was a mod for Warcraft III, a Blizzard game. Blizzard did not develop or publish Dota 2 itself. Riot Games and Hi-Rez Studios are also major names in the broader MOBA genre, but they are associated with League of Legends and Smite rather than Dota 2.
