Oculus created the Quest virtual-reality headsets before Meta adopted the Quest brand.
The Oculus Quest was introduced as a standalone virtual-reality headset in 2019. Unlike PC-dependent headsets, it contained the processing hardware needed to run VR experiences without being connected to a gaming computer.
Facebook had acquired Oculus VR in 2014 and used the Oculus name for several generations of virtual-reality products. After Facebook rebranded its parent company as Meta, the headset family was renamed Meta Quest, beginning with the product branding for newer models.
Oculus and Quest are therefore connected but not interchangeable names. Oculus identifies the original company and earlier branding, while Quest is the product family that continued under Meta.
