Brighton & Hove Albion’s European schedule caused its opener to kick off at the same time as Manchester City’s.
Brighton hosted Aston Villa on Sunday 23 August 2026 at 14:00 BST. Manchester City versus Bournemouth was also scheduled for 14:00 that afternoon, creating two simultaneous Premier League matches.
The Premier League explained that Brighton’s participation in the UEFA Conference League qualification play-offs on the preceding Thursday affected the scheduling. The club therefore played its league opener on Sunday afternoon rather than in another standard television slot.
This is an example of how domestic fixtures are adjusted around UEFA competitions. Premier League clubs competing in Europe can receive altered dates or kickoff times to provide recovery time and avoid calendar conflicts. Brighton’s European involvement was therefore directly connected to the unusual pairing of simultaneous Sunday matches.
