Ipswich defeated Sunderland 2–1 at home on Saturday 22 August 2026. The result gave Ipswich three points on their return to the Premier League and left Sunderland without a point from the opening round.
The match was a meeting between two promoted clubs. Ipswich had returned to the top division after a one-year absence, while Sunderland were also beginning a new Premier League campaign after promotion. Their fixture therefore represented one of the opening weekend’s clearest contests between newly promoted teams.
