The champions began their title defence at home on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal defeated Coventry City 3–0, making the result one of the clearest victories of the opening round and giving the London club an immediate three points.
Arsenal’s opponents were newly promoted, so the match carried a familiar opening-day storyline: the reigning champions facing a club newly arrived from the Championship. Coventry’s appearance marked their return to Premier League football after an absence of 25 years.
The result also made Arsenal the first league leaders of the new campaign, although opening-weekend tables are shaped by goal difference and by the order in which fixtures are played. A winning start does not itself determine the eventual champion.
