Arsenal were the defending champions when the 2026–27 Premier League season opened.
Arsenal entered the campaign as the previous season’s champions and began their title defence at home to Coventry City on Friday 21 August 2026. That match was selected as the season opener.
The 2026–27 campaign was Arsenal’s next opportunity to retain the Premier League title. Their opening fixture therefore combined the traditional first match of the season with the champions’ title-defence storyline.
Arsenal should not be confused with Liverpool or Manchester City in this context. Those clubs were prominent Premier League title contenders in earlier seasons, but the 2026–27 season summary identifies Arsenal as the defending champions.
