Coventry City was the only 2026–27 Premier League opening-round team returning after a 25-year top-flight absence.
Coventry returned to the Premier League for the first time since 2001. Their opening-round fixture was an away match at Arsenal on Friday 21 August 2026, where Arsenal won 3–0. The quarter-century gap was the longest absence by a previous Premier League club in the Premier League era at that point.
Ipswich Town and Hull City were the other promoted clubs. Ipswich had been away for one year, while Hull had been away for nine years. All three promoted teams therefore appeared in the opening round, but Coventry’s historical gap was much longer.
The figure is sometimes confused with the ages of clubs, the length of time since Coventry’s earlier top-flight campaigns, or the gaps of other promoted sides. It refers specifically to the period between Coventry’s previous Premier League season and their 2026–27 return.
