Liverpool scored the latest goal of Newcastle United versus Liverpool on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The match appeared to be heading Newcastle’s way after Joe Willock restored the hosts’ lead in the second half. Liverpool continued attacking, however, and won a penalty in stoppage time after Victor Muñoz was fouled.
Dominik Szoboszlai converted the penalty in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time. That strike made the final score 2–2 and gave Liverpool a point in Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League match as head coach.
The timing is the key distinction in this question. Newcastle scored first and led twice, but Liverpool produced the final goal. The late penalty therefore changed the result from a Newcastle victory to a draw.
