Coventry City returned to the Premier League after the longest absence among the 2026–27 promoted teams.
Coventry had been away from the Premier League for 25 years before returning for the 2026–27 season. That was longer than the absences of Ipswich Town, who returned after one year, and Hull City, who returned after nine years.
The club’s return added historical significance to the opening fixture because Coventry were drawn away to defending champions Arsenal on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal won 3–0 at the Emirates Stadium, but Coventry’s presence marked a major milestone for the club.
The 25-year gap was described as the longest absence for a former Premier League club in the Premier League era at that point. Coventry were promoted alongside Ipswich and Hull, replacing relegated West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
