Which club returned to the Premier League after 25 years for the 2026–27 opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Coventry City returned to the Premier League after 25 years for the 2026–27 opening weekend.

Coventry began its return with the season-opening fixture against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026. The club’s promotion marked a quarter-century absence from England’s top division.

The 2026–27 promoted group also included Ipswich Town and Hull City, but their previous absences were shorter or different: Ipswich returned after one year away and Hull after nine years. Coventry therefore had the longest wait among the three promoted clubs.

Coventry’s opening match was especially prominent because it was the first game of the entire Premier League season. Although Coventry lost 3–0, its promotion itself represented a major milestone in the club’s modern history and brought it back to the top flight after 25 years.
