Ipswich Town played its first Premier League match back in the top flight against Sunderland in 2026–27.
The fixture was scheduled for Saturday 22 August 2026, with Ipswich hosting Sunderland at Portman Road. It was part of the opening weekend’s group of 15:00 BST matches.
Ipswich had returned to the Premier League after an absence of one year. The club was one of three promoted teams in the 2026–27 competition, alongside Coventry City and Hull City. Those three clubs all appeared in the opening round.
The wording can cause confusion because Hull City and Coventry City were also promoted and also played newly arranged opening fixtures. Hull hosted Manchester United, while Coventry travelled to defending champions Arsenal; only Ipswich faced Sunderland.
