Which club finished as Premier League runner-up with 97 points?
Answer
Liverpool
Answer
Liverpool
Liverpool finished as Premier League runner-up with 97 points in the 2018–19 season. They lost only one league match all season, yet still finished one point behind Manchester City, who collected 98 points to retain the title.
Liverpool’s total was extraordinary by normal title-race standards. It was the highest points total ever achieved by a second-placed team in the Premier League and, at the time, the highest total by any English top-flight runner-up. City secured the championship on the final day by beating Brighton & Hove Albion 4–1, while Liverpool defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2–0 at Anfield.
The result was especially painful for Liverpool because they led the table by seven points on 3 January. Their only league defeat came away to Manchester City in January, but a remarkable 30 wins and seven draws were not enough. Liverpool later won the Premier League in 2019–20, ending a 30-year wait for an English top-flight title.
