Newcastle United faced Liverpool in the final Sunday match of the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The fixture was scheduled for Sunday, 23 August 2026, with a 16:30 BST kickoff. Newcastle hosted the match at St James’ Park, making it the last Premier League game played on the opening Sunday.
Liverpool began the season under a new head coach, Andoni Iraola, after his appointment in June 2026. Newcastle also entered the campaign with a new manager, Matthias Jaissle, appointed in August.
The match was followed by the opening round’s only Monday fixture, Fulham versus Chelsea. This gave the first Match Round a Friday start, a full Saturday schedule, three Sunday games and one Monday game.
