Newcastle United faced Liverpool at home on Sunday afternoon of the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The fixture was scheduled for Sunday, 23 August 2026, at St James' Park. Its listed kickoff was 16:30 BST, making it the later Sunday match after Brighton & Hove Albion versus Aston Villa and Manchester City versus Bournemouth.
The game paired two historic English clubs and was one of the opening round's most prominent fixtures. Newcastle's home ground, St James' Park, is located in central Newcastle upon Tyne and has long been associated with the club's distinctive home support.
This match can be confused with Manchester City versus Bournemouth, which also took place on Sunday. However, Newcastle versus Liverpool was the Sunday fixture scheduled for 16:30, while the other two Sunday matches were listed for 14:00.
