Which club did Manchester City come from behind to beat 2–1 in the 2026–27 opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Manchester City came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2–1 in the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.

Bournemouth took a first-half lead at the Etihad Stadium on 23 August 2026, when Marcus Tavernier scored in the 26th minute. Manchester City then overturned the deficit late in the match.

Marc Guéhi equalised with a header six minutes from full time, and Joško Gvardiol scored the winner in stoppage time. Substitute Rayan Cherki assisted both City goals, turning an influential appearance from the bench into the defining contribution of the comeback.

Bournemouth had never previously led at the Etihad before the match and were only six minutes from winning there for the first time. City’s victory ended Bournemouth’s 18-match unbeaten Premier League run. It was also the first match of Enzo Maresca’s reign as Manchester City manager.
