Jack Clarke scored against Sunderland in the 90th minute of Ipswich Town’s 2–1 opening-weekend victory.
The goal was especially notable because Clarke had previously played for Sunderland. His late finish settled a match at Portman Road and gave Ipswich their first Matchweek 1 top-flight victory since the 1993–94 season.
Ipswich had taken the lead through Emersonn, while Sunderland equalised through Nilson Angulo’s direct free-kick. Clarke then struck in the 90th minute to complete Ipswich’s comeback-preventing win and give the newly promoted side three points.
The match was one of two opening-weekend victories by promoted teams. Hull City also won, defeating Manchester United 2–0. Ipswich’s success was different because it came against another promoted club: Sunderland. That makes the fixture easy to mix up with Hull’s result, but Clarke’s decisive goal belonged to Ipswich’s home match against Sunderland.
