Which club conceded four goals in the first 31 minutes against Brighton in the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Aston Villa conceded four goals in the first 31 minutes against Brighton in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Brighton defeated Aston Villa 4–0 on 23 August 2026 after an extraordinary opening half-hour. Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in a 79-second span, Maxim De Cuyper added a third, and Victor Lindelöf put the ball into his own net for the fourth.

Villa’s problems deepened when João Gomes was dismissed five minutes before half-time. Brighton eased off after reaching four goals, so the final score remained 4–0 rather than becoming an even larger defeat.

The match entered the opening-weekend record book because Brighton became only the fourth club to score four first-half goals in a Matchweek 1 fixture. Aston Villa’s defeat also began a difficult campaign for Unai Emery’s side.
