Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Aston Villa 4–0 on Sunday 23 August 2026. The result was the largest winning margin of the opening round, and Villa were the only team to lose by four goals during that weekend.
The defeat left Aston Villa with a goal difference of minus four, the lowest figure in the initial table. Brighton, by contrast, began with plus four and moved to first place after the round.
Aston Villa’s result should not be confused with the other heavy defeats from the weekend. Tottenham Hotspur lost 3–0 to Brentford, Coventry City lost 3–0 to Arsenal, and Manchester United lost 2–0 to Hull City. Brighton’s four-goal margin was therefore the clear maximum.
