Ipswich Town beat Sunderland 2–1 in their first Premier League match back in 2026–27.
The match was played on Saturday 22 August 2026. Ipswich hosted Sunderland in one of three fixtures that kicked off at the same Saturday afternoon time, alongside Everton versus Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest versus Leeds United.
Ipswich were one of the promoted clubs entering the season. Their return to the Premier League came after a one-year absence, making the opening fixture an immediate top-flight reunion with Sunderland, another historic English club.
The 2–1 result was the only opening-round victory by a promoted team in which the winning side conceded. Hull City won 2–0 against Manchester United, while Coventry City lost 3–0 to Arsenal.
