Which club beat Reading 7-4 in the Premier League's highest-scoring match?

The story behind the answer

Portsmouth beat Reading 7–4 in the Premier League’s highest-scoring match.

The extraordinary game took place at Fratton Park on 29 September 2007, producing 11 goals. Portsmouth led 2–1 at half-time, then pulled away during a chaotic final 20 minutes as both sides repeatedly exposed defensive gaps. The result remains the competition’s record for total goals in one match.

Benjani Mwaruwari scored a hat-trick for Portsmouth, while Niko Kranjčar and Sulley Muntari were also among the home side’s scorers. Reading’s goals included strikes by Stephen Hunt, Dave Kitson, Shane Long and Nicky Shorey. Nine different players scored, another memorable detail from the match.

This record is sometimes confused with the Premier League’s highest-scoring draw, West Bromwich Albion’s 5–5 draw with Manchester United in 2013. Other famous high-scoring wins, such as Tottenham’s 9–1 victory over Wigan, involved fewer total goals than Portsmouth’s 7–4 classic.
