Ronald McDonald became McDonald’s official mascot in 1963, helping define the brand’s family advertising.
The character was created for McDonald’s television advertising and was initially portrayed by television personality Willard Scott. Ronald’s costume included a yellow jumpsuit, red-and-white striped shirt, red hair, and oversized footwear, establishing a highly recognizable visual identity.
Ronald later became the central figure in McDonaldland, a fictional setting populated by characters such as the Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese. Those characters gave McDonald’s advertising a distinctive fantasy world aimed especially at children.
Ronald McDonald is sometimes confused with the Hamburglar because both were prominent McDonaldland figures. The Hamburglar was a mischievous character, while Ronald was the brand’s primary mascot and public-facing representative.
