The cloud storage startup co-founded by Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi was Dropbox.
Houston conceived the service after repeatedly forgetting his USB flash drive as an MIT student. He founded Evenflow, Inc. in 2007, and Arash Ferdowsi joined after seeing an early demonstration. The company received seed funding from Y Combinator and developed a service that synchronized files across computers and later mobile devices.
Dropbox officially launched at the 2008 TechCrunch Disrupt conference. Its central idea was to make files available across devices without requiring users to manually copy them between drives. That combination of cloud storage and automatic synchronization helped distinguish it from simple file-transfer services.
The alternatives are common mix-ups: Box is also a cloud file-storage company, while WeTransfer focuses primarily on sending files. Mega is another storage and file-sharing service, but none of those companies was founded by this particular MIT-linked pair.
