The cloud communications platform startup founded by Jeff Lawson was Twilio.
Twilio was founded in 2008 by Jeff Lawson, Evan Cooke, and John Wolthuis. Its first major product, launched that year, let developers make and receive phone calls through web-based application programming interfaces instead of building telecommunications infrastructure themselves.
The company later expanded from voice into SMS, MMS, video, authentication, contact-center tools, and other programmable communications. Twilio became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 2016. A common mix-up is SendGrid: Twilio acquired that email-delivery company in 2019, but SendGrid was a separate startup founded by Isaac Saldana, Craig T. Saldana, and Jose Lopez.
Twilio’s name is associated with its TwiML markup language, which lets applications describe call and messaging behavior. Jeff Lawson later served as Twilio’s chief executive before stepping down in 2024.
