Which city hosted the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games, the first in South America?

The story behind the answer

Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games, the first Paralympics held in South America.

The Games ran from 7 to 18 September 2016, following the 2016 Summer Olympics in the same Brazilian city. Rio’s hosting role marked a major geographic milestone because South America had not previously staged either a Summer or Winter Paralympic Games.

Events took place at venues including the Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Aquatics Stadium, and the Riocentro convention complex. More than 4,000 athletes competed across 22 sports.

Rio de Janeiro is sometimes confused with São Paulo because both are major Brazilian cities, but São Paulo did not host the 2016 Paralympic Games. Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and was not the host city either.
