Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Paralympics, the first held in the same city as the Olympics.
The Seoul Games marked a major organizational turning point because Paralympic athletes used many of the same venues and facilities as Olympic athletes. The event took place in South Korea from 15 to 24 October 1988, after the Seoul Olympic Games had concluded.
This closer relationship helped raise the profile of the Paralympics and encouraged more consistent cooperation between Olympic and Paralympic organizers. Seoul also hosted a large field of competitors, with more than 3,000 athletes representing over 60 countries.
The Games were not the first Paralympic event associated with an Olympic host city in a broader sense, but Seoul is generally identified as the first Summer Paralympics staged in the same host city and venues in the modern integrated arrangement. Later editions increasingly adopted this model.
