Which city did Georgia O'Keeffe move to in 1918 to join Alfred Stieglitz?
Answer
New York City
Answer
New York City
Georgia O'Keeffe moved to New York City in 1918 to join Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz, a photographer and gallery owner, had exhibited O'Keeffe’s work before they began their personal relationship. O'Keeffe’s move brought her into the center of the American modernist art world and allowed her to work as a full-time artist.
The couple married in 1924. During the 1920s, O'Keeffe painted New York subjects, including views of skyscrapers, while also producing enlarged flower paintings and other works that attracted major attention.
New York was an important base, but it was not the setting of her entire career. She later spent regular periods in New Mexico, where the landscape, architecture, and bones became central subjects. The move in 1918 therefore marks a major career transition rather than the beginning of her association with the Southwest.
