Georgia O'Keeffe’s Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for $44.4 million at auction in 2014.
Sotheby’s sold the 1932 painting in New York on November 20, 2014. The final price, including the buyer’s premium, was $44,405,000. The result established a record for the highest auction price paid for a work by a female artist at that time.
The painting shows a large white jimson weed flower against a dark background. O'Keeffe gave the work to her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, and it later entered the collection of philanthropist Georgia O’Keeffe supporter and collector David Rockefeller. The auction result drew renewed attention to the market and historical recognition of women artists.
The record was specific to the auction market and to the time of the sale; later sales by other women artists have exceeded it. The figure also includes the buyer’s premium, so it is more precise than simply saying the hammer price was $44.4 million.
