Which Georgia O'Keeffe painting series was inspired by the landscape around Lake George?

The story behind the answer

The Lake George series was inspired by the landscape around Lake George.

O'Keeffe spent extended periods at Lake George, New York, where Alfred Stieglitz’s family owned a summer property. Between the 1910s and early 1930s, the area supplied her with subjects ranging from leaves and flowers to hills, trees, barns, and changing seasonal colors.

The Lake George works show how O'Keeffe moved between recognizable observation and abstraction. A leaf or landscape could be enlarged, simplified, and reorganized until its shapes and colors became the central subject.

The series is distinct from her later New Mexico paintings. Lake George belongs mainly to the earlier eastern phase of her career, while Ghost Ranch, Abiquiú, and desert bones belong to the Southwestern phase that followed her first visit to New Mexico in 1929.
