Ankara
Answer
Ankara
Which city became Turkey's capital in 1923? Ankara became Turkey's capital in 1923.
Ankara was declared the capital of the newly established Republic of Turkey on 13 October 1923, shortly before the republic was formally proclaimed on 29 October. It replaced Istanbul, the former capital of the Ottoman Empire.
The choice reflected Ankara's role in the Turkish nationalist movement. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the Grand National Assembly used the city as the headquarters of the resistance during the Turkish War of Independence. Located in central Anatolia, Ankara was also less exposed to foreign control than Istanbul at the time.
Ankara was once known in Western languages as Angora and has a much older history than its republican capital status. Ancient Hittite, Phrygian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman remains survive in and around the city. Istanbul remains Turkey's largest and most internationally famous city, but Ankara is the political capital.
