Which capital city lies on the Tiber River?
Answer
Rome
Answer
Rome
Rome is the capital city that lies on the Tiber River in central Italy.
The Tiber flows through Rome from north to south before reaching the Tyrrhenian Sea. The river helped shape the city’s early growth, providing access to inland settlements and a route toward the coast. Rome’s traditional founding story places its beginnings on the Tiber’s eastern bank, near the hills that became the centre of ancient Roman power.
Several famous landmarks stand along or near the river, including the historic centre, Castel Sant’Angelo and Tiber Island. Tiber Island was important in ancient times and remains one of the distinctive features of Rome’s urban landscape. The river also separates parts of the modern city, including the historic Trastevere district on its western side.
The answer is sometimes confused with Vienna, which lies on the Danube, or Lisbon, which lies on the Tagus. Madrid is inland on the Manzanares River. Rome’s association with the Tiber is much older than the modern Italian state: the river was central to the city’s mythology, commerce and military history long before Rome became Italy’s capital in 1871.
