Which European capital lies at the foot of Mount Vitosha?

The story behind the answer

Sofia is the European capital that lies at the foot of Mount Vitosha.

Vitosha is a mountain massif immediately south of Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital. Its proximity makes it one of the city’s defining natural landmarks: residents can reach hiking trails, ski areas and viewpoints from the urban area relatively quickly. The mountain’s highest point is Cherni Vrah, which rises to 2,292 metres.

Vitosha is more than a scenic backdrop. Much of it is protected within Vitosha Nature Park, established in 1934 and widely regarded as Bulgaria’s oldest nature park. The massif’s accessible trails and cableways have made it a popular destination for hiking, mountaineering and winter sports.

A common mix-up is confusing Sofia with other Balkan capitals such as Sarajevo, Skopje or Ljubljana. Those cities also sit near prominent mountains or rugged terrain, but Vitosha is specifically associated with Sofia. The mountain’s closeness is unusual among European capitals and helps explain why Sofia is often described as a city at the foot of a mountain.
