Oppenheimer won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 96th Oscars.
The 96th Academy Awards honored films released during 2023 and took place on March 10, 2024. Oppenheimer was produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven, and Christopher Nolan, and it became the first film directed by Nolan to win Best Picture.
The film also won awards for Nolan’s direction, Cillian Murphy’s lead performance, Robert Downey Jr.’s supporting performance, editing, cinematography, original score, and film editing. Its story centers on J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the first atomic bomb.
This result is distinct from the Academy Award for Best Director: Nolan won that award at the same ceremony, whereas the Best Picture award formally recognizes the film’s producing team.
