Which Chinese peninsula forms the southernmost part of Guangdong Province?
Answer
Leizhou Peninsula
Answer
Leizhou Peninsula
Leizhou Peninsula forms the southernmost part of China’s Guangdong Province.
The peninsula projects southward from mainland Guangdong between the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea. Its southern tip is separated from Hainan Island by the Qiongzhou Strait, a strategically important waterway crossed by ferries and served by the Guangdong–Hainan ferry connection.
The region has a warm, humid climate and is known for volcanic landscapes, tropical and subtropical agriculture, and coastal fisheries. Leizhou city is one of the principal urban centres. The peninsula also includes parts of Zhanjiang, a major port in southwestern Guangdong.
Leizhou is sometimes mistaken for Hainan because both are associated with the Qiongzhou Strait. Hainan, however, is an island province south of the strait, while Leizhou is the mainland peninsula on its northern side. The peninsula’s location gives it importance in maritime transport between mainland China and Hainan.
