Which chicken breed is widely recognized as the largest purebred chicken breed?
Answer
Jersey Giant
Answer
Jersey Giant
The Jersey Giant is widely recognized as the largest purebred chicken breed.
John and Thomas Black developed the breed in New Jersey in the late 19th century. Their aim was to create a large meat bird that could replace turkeys on the market. The breed was initially called the Jersey Black Giant, reflecting its original black plumage; white and blue varieties were developed later.
Jersey Giants are heavy-bodied chickens with a single comb and dark legs, although precise coloring varies by variety. Standard weights are substantial: adult roosters are listed at about 13 pounds, while hens are about 10 pounds. Their size comes with relatively slow growth compared with many modern commercial broilers.
The breed is sometimes confused with the Brahma, another exceptionally large chicken. Brahmas can appear taller because of their feathered legs, but “largest purebred chicken breed” commonly identifies the Jersey Giant by body weight. The American Poultry Association recognized the black variety in 1922.
