The Saanen goat originated in Switzerland’s Saanen Valley and is known for its white coat.
Saanen goats are a major dairy breed, valued for producing substantial quantities of milk. They are usually white or cream-colored, with short hair and a calm, adaptable temperament. Both does and bucks may have horns, although many are naturally polled or selectively disbudded.
The breed developed in the Swiss canton of Bern and spread internationally through exports. Its strong dairy performance helped make it an important foundation breed in commercial and small-scale goat dairying. Saanens generally perform best in moderate climates but are raised in many countries.
Saanens are sometimes confused with other Swiss dairy breeds, especially the Toggenburg, which has distinctive facial stripes and a brown coat. The name refers specifically to the Saanen Valley, not to a type of goat milk or cheese.
