Which character is the primary antagonist in many Mickey cartoons?

The story behind the answer

Which character is the primary antagonist in many Mickey cartoons? Pete.

Pete is the primary antagonist in many Mickey Mouse cartoons, where he typically acts as Mickey’s scheming rival, bully or criminal adversary. He is commonly depicted as a large anthropomorphic cat and is also known by names such as Peg-Leg Pete and Black Pete.

Pete predates Mickey. He first appeared in the 1925 Alice Comedies short Alice Solves the Puzzle, originally resembling an anthropomorphic bear. After Mickey’s arrival in 1928, Pete was reworked as a cat and became Mickey’s recurring nemesis, appearing in cartoons including The Gallopin’ Gaucho and Steamboat Willie.

His role is flexible rather than identical in every story. Pete may be an outlaw, sheriff, landlord, sailor, authority figure or simply an aggressive nuisance. His repeated attempts to cause trouble for Mickey and Minnie nevertheless made him the most recognizable continuing villain in the Mickey cast.

Pete is not always purely evil. In Goof Troop, he was reimagined as Goofy’s exploitative friend and neighbor, with a wife, children and a used-car business. That alternate portrayal explains why modern Disney stories can show Pete as a comic foil rather than an outright criminal.
