The bulldog who is Pluto’s rival is Butch the Bulldog.

Butch was introduced in Disney’s 1940 short “Bone Trouble,” where Pluto steals his bone and is chased through a carnival hall of mirrors. He became one of Pluto’s recurring antagonists in the classic theatrical shorts.

Their rivalry is not limited to food and territory. Butch also competes with Pluto for the attention of Dinah the Dachshund, Pluto’s recurring canine love interest. In “Pluto’s Heart Throb” from 1950, the two dogs vie for Dinah’s affection.

Viewers sometimes confuse this Butch with other bulldog characters named Spike, especially the bulldog from Tex Avery’s Droopy cartoons or the alley cat from Tom and Jerry.
