Which character dies after fighting Ivan Drago in Rocky IV?

The story behind the answer

Apollo Creed dies after fighting Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. The former heavyweight champion comes out of retirement for an exhibition match against the much larger Soviet boxer.

Creed treats the bout as a patriotic spectacle, entering to James Brown's “Living in America” and expecting to defeat Drago quickly. Drago's power proves overwhelming, however. After badly injuring Creed in the first round, he continues attacking in the second while Creed refuses to let Rocky stop the fight. Rocky hesitates before throwing in the towel, and Drago lands the fatal punch.

Creed dies in Rocky's arms in the ring, prompting Rocky to challenge Drago himself. Rocky gives up his championship title to arrange an unsanctioned Christmas Day fight in Moscow. The story is sometimes misremembered because Drago is the fighter who causes the death, while Duke Evers is Creed's trainer and Mickey Goldmill is Rocky's trainer. Creed's death also drives the central revenge plot of Rocky IV and shapes Adonis Creed's motivation in the later Creed films.
