Disney introduced Disney Dollars in 1987 as specially designed currency for use at its theme parks and resorts. The notes were denominated in familiar U.S.-style amounts, but they were redeemable only within participating Disney properties and could also be kept as souvenirs.

The first issue used different Disney characters on different denominations. Mickey Mouse appeared on the $1 note, while other characters were used on higher-value notes. This sometimes causes confusion because Mickey also appeared on many later Disney Dollar designs, not only the inaugural one.
