Genesis 6 first gives God’s command to Noah to build the Ark. In Genesis 6:14, Noah is told to make an Ark of gopher wood, construct rooms in it, and cover it with pitch inside and outside.
The same chapter supplies the vessel’s main dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. It also describes the corruption and violence that prompt the flood judgment in the narrative.
Genesis 7 moves from construction to the entry of Noah, his family, and the animals, followed by the beginning of the flood. Genesis 8 describes the recession of the waters, while Genesis 9 records the covenant associated with the rainbow.
The chapter sequence is useful because details commonly remembered together are distributed across several chapters. Dimensions and construction appear in Genesis 6, the flood’s onset in Genesis 7, and the covenant sign in Genesis 9.
