Which capital city is divided by a wall separating Greek and Turkish sectors?

The story behind the answer

Which capital city is divided by a wall separating Greek and Turkish sectors? Nicosia is the answer.

Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and is commonly described as Europe's last divided capital. The division follows the Green Line, now part of the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus. It separates the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus in the south from the Turkish-controlled northern part of the city.

The urban division emerged after intercommunal violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in December 1963. The situation became far more entrenched after Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus, when a ceasefire line was established across the island. In Nicosia, that line runs through the historic centre, with walls, sandbags, fencing and checkpoints marking parts of the boundary.

The name Green Line dates from 1963, when a United Nations officer drew the proposed separation line on a map with a green pen. Crossings have gradually reopened, including Ledra Street in 2008, but the political division remains. The answer is Nicosia—not Berlin, whose wall fell in 1989, nor Jerusalem, which has a different and complex political status.
