Which capital city hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics?
Answer
Helsinki
Answer
Helsinki
Helsinki hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics. The Games of the XV Olympiad were held in Finland’s capital from 19 July to 3 August 1952.
Helsinki had originally been selected for the 1940 Summer Olympics, but those Games were cancelled because World War II and the Winter War made international competition impossible. Finland continued pursuing the event, and the International Olympic Committee awarded Helsinki the 1952 Games in 1947.
The city expanded and modernized its infrastructure for the Olympics. The Olympic Stadium, begun for the cancelled 1940 event, was enlarged and refurbished, while new facilities included an airport, an Olympic pier, roads, and improved accommodation. The Games helped project Finland as a capable post-war host.
A total of 69 nations competed in 149 events across 17 sports. The Soviet Union made its Olympic debut, and Germany returned to the Summer Games after World War II. Helsinki remains the northernmost city to have hosted a Summer Olympics. Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo are plausible regional distractors, but Stockholm hosted the 1912 Summer Olympics and Oslo hosted the 1952 Winter Olympics.
