Which Buenos Aires avenue is often described as one of the widest avenues in the world?
Answer
Avenida 9 de Julio
Answer
Avenida 9 de Julio
Avenida 9 de Julio, in Buenos Aires, is often described as one of the widest avenues in the world.
The avenue is named for 9 July 1816, Argentina's Independence Day. It runs through central Buenos Aires for roughly 3.4 kilometers, linking the Retiro area in the north with the Constitución area in the south. Its exceptional width comes from multiple traffic lanes, broad central medians, and parallel side streets.
The avenue is especially recognizable because the Obelisco de Buenos Aires stands at its intersection with Avenida Corrientes. A Metrobus corridor opened along the avenue in July 2013, adding a dedicated bus rapid-transit route to this already substantial urban axis.
Travelers sometimes confuse Avenida 9 de Julio with Avenida Corrientes because the Obelisk is associated with both. Avenida Corrientes is the major east-west street crossing the avenue, while Avenida 9 de Julio is the broad north-south thoroughfare. Its width is often quoted as about 110 meters, although measurements and claims vary depending on what is counted.
