Igor Thiago missed a penalty for Brentford during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Brentford still defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3–0, but Thiago’s missed spot-kick prevented the Bees from potentially finishing the day top of the table on goal difference. The miss was the one major blemish in an otherwise dominant performance.
Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the 12th minute after being set up by debutant Mamadou Sangare. Vitaly Janelt then doubled Brentford’s advantage before half-time, and Michael Kayode completed the scoring after the interval.
Thiago joined Brentford as a powerful attacking player and was expected to contribute goals in his first full campaign with the club. Although he did not score against Tottenham, Brentford’s three-goal victory matched the strong start they wanted under manager Keith Andrews.
Tottenham’s defeat was especially notable because Archie Gray became the youngest player to captain the club in a competitive match, surpassing Steve Perryman’s previous record.
