The House at Pooh Corner
Answer
The House at Pooh Corner
The House at Pooh Corner first described the Poohsticks game in A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh stories.
Poohsticks involves dropping sticks from the upstream side of a bridge and watching to see which one emerges first downstream. The game was first described in Milne’s 1928 sequel, The House at Pooh Corner, rather than in the original 1926 collection.
In the story, Pooh drops a pine cone into a stream and notices it reappear on the other side of a bridge. He then develops the rules of the game and plays with Christopher Robin and other friends. The fictional pastime was inspired by play associated with Milne and his son in Ashdown Forest.
A real bridge in Ashdown Forest became strongly associated with the game and was later known as Poohsticks Bridge. The game also inspired organised competitions, which began in Oxfordshire in 1984.
