“Enter Sandman” was the Black Album song whose music video won Metallica an MTV Video Music Award.
Directed by Wayne Isham, the video won Best Rock Video at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. Its dark dream imagery, performance footage, and unsettling bedtime themes matched the song’s subject while making it highly visible on music television.
The award helped confirm that Metallica had crossed from specialist metal success into mainstream pop culture. The band’s earlier video for “One” had already earned major attention, but the “Enter Sandman” clip connected the new album to an even wider audience.
The question is sometimes confused with other Black Album videos. “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True” also received videos, but the award-winning Black Album clip in this category was “Enter Sandman.”
