Which Black Album song began with a riff written by Jason Newsted?
Answer
My Friend of Misery
Answer
My Friend of Misery
"My Friend of Misery" began with a riff written by Jason Newsted.
Newsted composed the main riff while working on material for Metallica. The idea was originally intended to become an instrumental, continuing a tradition in which earlier Metallica albums had included instrumental pieces.
The band developed the idea into a vocal song for The Black Album. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich were the principal songwriting partners on much of the record, while Kirk Hammett and Newsted also contributed ideas to individual songs.
The track appears near the end of the original album and is notable for its brooding, bass-centered character. It is sometimes incorrectly treated as solely a Hetfield-Ulrich composition because they wrote many of the album's songs, but the opening riff's origin is specifically associated with Newsted.
