Which bird does Genesis say Noah released before sending out the dove?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah released a raven before sending out the dove.

Genesis 8:6–7 describes Noah opening the ark’s window after the waters had begun to recede and sending out a raven. The verse says that the raven went back and forth until the waters dried from the earth. Noah then began a sequence of releases involving a dove.

The dove’s flights are described more fully: it first returns without finding a place to rest, then returns with an olive leaf, and finally does not come back. Because the dove and olive leaf became the most famous part of the bird episode, many retellings omit or overlook the raven.

The passage does not present the raven as carrying a leaf or as the covenant sign. Those details belong to the dove sequence and the later rainbow covenant, respectively. Keeping the episodes separate makes the chronology clear.
