Lemonade was the Beyoncé visual album released in 2016 after a surprise HBO premiere.
The project premiered as a 65-minute film on HBO on April 23, 2016, and was released digitally the same day. It combines songs, poetry, spoken narration, and imagery into a continuous audiovisual work rather than presenting ordinary music videos separately.
Lemonade explores themes including betrayal, grief, Black identity, family, history, and resilience. Its credits include artists and writers such as Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and Beyoncé’s collaborators from several musical traditions.
The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received widespread critical acclaim. It is sometimes mistaken for Black Is King, Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album connected to The Lion King: The Gift.
